The club was formed in 1988 by Keith Mace, Peter Newbould, Harry Jones (all of whom son's played for the first ever team),John Penistone, and Brian Smith. The idea at the time was to keep the kids from hanging around on street corners in gangs which was quite big at the time. The Wisewood Inn was our base, hence the name Wisewood Juniors. After the first season Harry Jones had to move back to his native Merseyside due to work commitments, but the others all still reside in the area and still ask regularly about the prosperity of the club. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength and now has teams across the age ranges from Under 8 to Under 16. The club also runs an academy for future players on Wednesdays 6-7pm at The Goodwin Centre teaching young players the basic skills before moving on to the Under 8 squad. The team is very reliant on the numerous volunteers that assist the club and team managers are more often than not parents who start by watching their children at the academy before offering their services. The club has achieved the FA Standard Charter Accreditation which underlines the clubs commitment to providing a structured approach to delivering quality coaching at grassroots level. Wisewood also won the FA Standard Charter club of the year for the Yorkshire region in 2006. Wisewood is an associate club with Sheffield Wednesday with provides an outlet for promising youngsters into professional coaching and possibly a future in professional football. Underlining this, the club has a continuous coaching development programme to ensure Wisewood managers and volunteers can acquire the necessary coaching badges to aid them whilst coaching at Wisewood.
